In reply to the discussion: Alan Turing, Who Cracked Nazi Code, stripped of rank, convicted for being gay [View all]Behind the Aegis
(56,098 posts)It has been a real issue when the marriage was finally allowed here last October. There were many afraid to get married because if they did, it would be officially on the record and therefore, give "legitimate" cause to fire someone from their job or even remove them from their home (renters can be thrown out for being gay).
I remember the Cracker Barrel crap! They would actually throw gay people out of the restaurant. I was going on a cruise with my grandparents and we stopped at a CB to eat (I wasn't out to them). I was so scared what would happen. Thankfully, they were too busy, so we went somewhere else. Of course, during the course of the cruise, my grandmother told me she and my grandfather "knew" and loved me unconditionally. I told her about my fear about CB. Her response? "Thank goodness we didn't eat there. If something had happened...Jack (my grandfather) has his gun; it wouldn't have been pretty!" LOL!
