(47,953 posts)People at DU love to blame voters, especially Democratic voters, and even more especially progressive Democratic voters. Instead of trying to understand why people stayed home, they just insult them. We shall see how well that works in 2016.
One of Obama's gifts in 2008, and somewhat in 2012, was to give people something TO VOTE FOR. To INSPIRE them. All I saw in 2010 and 2014 was a concerted effort to avoid giving people something TO VOTE FOR. Telling people that you are the lesser evil, that you are just like the Republicans except not crazy, doesn't work. Making them believe in you does. I may wish that he had stuck more closely to his campaign rhetoric but that is a separate issue.
Republicans are devoted because their party generally doesn't go around lambasting them. They throw them red meat rhetoric and double down.
But my main point is that in 2010 and 2014, Democrats allowed the Republicans to set the memes, set the agendas, and set the fears. They did not fight back sufficiently against the EBOLA/ISIS/BAD ECONOMY/Illegals fear mongering that was going on 24/7. THey seemed content to think that people would vote for them if only they could run a few more negative ads. All I see coming out from negative ads are repubs remaining enraged and democrats/independents becoming disillusioned with both candidates and staying home. Republican voters are fueled by hate to a larger degree than other groups. Inspired people will walk through fire to vote. But they have to be inspired.
