(52,428 posts)The differences are reflected in my parents' background. My father's father was Mexican, but had to leave hastily when he was a young man. The opposition group came looking for him with guns blazing. It was a different time back then and it was easier to get the necessary documents to migrate north. My father and his sisters were born in the U.S. But it really wasn't until my father married my mother and moved to Panama that he really had a chance to use his Latino roots to reach his full potential.
Panama was a very settled country in the time I was growing up, with a solid traditional system of school, church and social responsibility. Those that had money did what they could to help out the others-especially in the Interior, where my mother was from. Her family ran the gamut of teachers, politicians, businessmen and even a poet or two. Great role models.
The city was a little more chaotic, but, nevertheless, people came together for carnival time, no matter what was going on. But I couldn't tell you anything about what it's like today. My friends tell me it's overcrowded.
I may have driven through David once, but we didn't stay long enough to remember much about it.
I feel for you. If there is anyone in Mexico who has an answer to fix the problems, it's apparent that they first thing they should get is protection.
