(1,980 posts)Carter's great sin was suggesting the US had made mistakes at times. It wasn't a diatribe against America, it was an observation that Vietnam and the 60s had happened and the country needed to assess the results. That was unpardonable for many people because it was hard. That was about it.
The funny part is that when they criticize Carter, they ignore his continuance of his predecessors' policies in many areas. The Carter Doctrine? That was just NATO or ASEAN applied to a different region. The global war on the left? No, I'm pretty sure the killers of Rutillio Grande and Oscar Romero were trained at the School of the Americas (I said the left because there was a world of difference between Soviet imperialism and Romero's criticisms of Salvadoran society). Reagan's much-bloviated arms race? Pretty sure it got its start in 1979-80, with the growing resentment of Soviet adventurism. The difference are really ones of degree. Carter wouldn't play fast and loose like the idiots in the Reagan administration and he was less willing to write a blank check to DoD, but that was about it.
Aside from the first paragraph, the reason Cheney doesn't like Carter is because Cheney hates anyone not as warped as himself. He's so far gone into his fantasy of empire creation that he can't stand anyone who disagrees even a bit.
