Jimmy Carter early on realized we needed to start shifting our focus to solar and ween ourselves from the dwindling supplies of oil and coal. Essentially he was taking on the oil industry. That was way back in the early eighties. If we would've followed his advice we would be living in a different world.
Instead we followed Reagan and his greed is good, profit is God, screw the poor and middle class, trickle down, unregulated capitalism... And it's become crystal clear it's unsustainable. Probably deep down in somewhere in the dark corridors of Cheney's brain he know Carter was right and he hates him for it.
Carter is a perfect symbol of what's wrong with the Democratic party. How many times do we hear Democrats running for office eulogizing about how much they respect the great Ronald Reagan? When's the last time we heard Jimmy Carter or FDR mentioned in the same reverential manner? Almost never because they represent a ideology no longer embraced by the the Democratic party. Carter had his flaws but he was probably our last Democratic president.
