(60,973 posts)Read any of the accounts on James Bakers' J Street speech. He really is very unhappy with Netanyahu re BOTH Iran diplomacy and the peace process. This article speaks of the Republican reaction and the fact that Baker is prominently listed as a Jeb Bush adviser. http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/post-politics/wp/2015/03/24/jeb-bush-stresses-support-for-israel-in-wake-of-james-bakers-comments/
For laughs note that somehow GHWB's SoS is called PRE Reagan anti Israel by Bill Kristol. Fascinating time line there -- as it shows that the neo con RW, as exemplified by Kristol, has so usurped "Reagan", they are calling people who really did advise Reagan/Bush as "Pre Reagan". Very strange!
The serious point of this is that Reagan is the hero/god of the Republicans. This is not the first time that the real RR would not have jumped the bar the right sets to be part of their special club --even as they claim to march in his footsteps.
It would be something if people like Baker, Lugar and other moderate foreign policy Republicans speak out for giving diplomacy a chance. Obama/Kerry had to know that an agreement with Iran was an out and out break with the neo con foreign policy and that there would be a fight.
This is a fight for the soul of American foreign policy. I think Kerry is correct in saying that if an agreement is reached -- and if it working, a future President really could not take us back to the point we are at today. It would make no sense. More importantly, I doubt that Israel, Sunni dictatorships and the US could persuade the world to reapply sanctions onto an Iran that is complying with the agreement. (Not to mention, I hope we get a Democratic President, who could continue to work for a more peaceful world.)
