(7,699 posts)This is just the first link I found, not particularly informative other than the quote, but I read about this in many places while completing my degree to teach US History in high school.

Just trying to recall from the top of my head, ship captains could just have people ripped off the streets in London and elsewhere, transport them to North America, and get paid, make a profit. Something along those lines. Might not have been the ship captains, but there was a dire need for labor in the Americas, and people were kidnapping people off the streets and sending them over.
