He allowed (not forced) the man to resign because some right wing assholes had a fake outrage over him being gay.

Jones and Sherrod were pressured to resign, not because of comments they made but because some right wing assholes and a fake outrage over those comments.

Sounds pretty much the same to me. The common denominator is fear over fake outrage by right wing assholes.
