and mostly the US. Because in the US any nutbag could grab a bible, start bullshitting and claim to be a "minister" many did. In European countries with state religions, particularly where Orthodox and Catholic churches were dominant, this literally could not happen.

Jefferson and Madison doubtless thought that "religious freedom" would bee a safeguard for people like Roger Williams and sects like the Quakers. I very much doubt that they anticipated the fly-eating, lizard people crazues and scamming hucksters, from Robertson to Joseph Smith to L. Ron Hubbard, that have hidden behind it for the last 200 years.

Towards the end of their lives Jefferson wrote John Adams that he wished he had told Madison to put freedom from religion into the Constitution. John Adams concurred wholeheartedly that the failure to do so had been a grave mistake.
