Unfortunately, the Catholic sacrament is called by the same name as the civil procedure for publicly affirming a relationship. The trouble comes when rather dull-witted people confuse the two, and start thinking that because a particular form of marriage is recognized by the civil authority, it requires a church authority to do the same. Doubly unfortuantely, there are well-financed interests that can turn a buck on the confusion, who are eager to exploit it for their own gain, and to the detriment of an orderly society by dividing people and setting them at odds with one another over a phony issue.
