Since it takes money, big money is it even possible for a regular joe to win?

Often during primary season I see a "regular joe" give it a try. They normally lose big. If heading toward election day if they do seem to be any form of contender at all, they are totally slaughtered by negative advertising which will be aired 24/7. I don't know when the last time I can remember a regular joe win any office of worth.
