In reply to the discussion: Pope Francis To Send Out Priests To Forgive The 'Sin' Of Women Who Have Had Abortions [View all]lostnfound
(17,450 posts)Growing up in a catholic family, my parents were not allowed to be full participants in the church because my dad was divorced. They sought an annulment of his first marriage, I think, and it was denied. To be absolved, they were told that he would basically need to abandon his three young children and my mother to go back to his first wife, or perhaps live as "brother and sister".
They still raised us Catholic including education. But I think they felt some shame or unworthiness. After my dad died, my mom was "able to be forgiven."
For my sweet angel of a mother, who was kind and tough, loving and forgiving, I am happy for this announcement. She had no abortion, but divorce was the parallel of the day.
I am not a churchgoer, but for some women this will be a comfort.
