(76,635 posts)The "dumping" of SUV's is overhyped. Lots of people couldn't afford to, since they overspent on their beast.
Those that could dumped them, and then others bought them as cheap used cars. So, the SUV's weren't dumped at all. They just have different owners now.
And, you're right: The monofocus on consumption ends up making strange bedfellows because posters, like the one to whom you were responding, didn't really think things through. Demand is not really down that much, so high gas prices didn't affect driving as much as it inhibited the economy because people were not spending that extra money on other discretionary items.
High gas prices are bad for everyone, and low gas prices don't stimulate driving. The data just doesn't exist.
