Yes, an Aussie movie set there, but it is illustrative of what my history prof called "The American Cowboy Myth." Ya know, the one where the strong, quiet, lone gunman avoids conflict as much as possible, even allowing the bad guys to hit him first, before finally giving in and resorting to uber-violence in order to save the defenseless villagers. Also in this worldview, the men are MEN and women are meek, helpless things. How DARE Theron's character boss him around!
Of course Max does it for the gasoline usually, so perhaps he's an anti-hero to some degree....
