(19,537 posts)If we want to grow progressive influence in our government, we're going to have to help those already in it to step up the ladder when they have the right opportunities to do so. And then open up the door to build others to take over their spots so that we have more numbers. Though we certainly can continue to use a voice like DeFazio in the House, or Elizabeth Warren in the Senate as well, they shouldn't feel like they have to "stay there" to help progressives. We need to build and grow our numbers, not just "hold on" to those we have now. The Tea Party is doing that and pushing out Republican veterans like Eric Cantor. Populist Progressives should be doing the same in the Democratic Party.
I think there would be a lot of other good progressive voices that could take over DeFazio's seat in the House. Corvalis just elected a newer Dem to the State Senate (Sara Gelser) there. Perhaps she or others like her from that college town area would want to step up to take this seat.
I have to believe that his district wouldn't let someone like Art Robinson get elected there, as much as he has tried to push his distorted logic on to that district and to the state Republican Party as its chair.
