16. EVERYONE KNEW. This is what I find so hard to believe. The media kept silent, but they HAD to

know.

HELL, I KNEW. I used to have to visit the Hill in my work, with reasonable frequency. You make 'friends' with people when you're stuck warming a bench--you chat, you exchange stories, and so forth. It was one way to relieve the boredom--I heard a ton of stuff simply by saying "Oh really? You don't say! Tell me more!"

I heard this rumor a dozen times while I was up that way. There's also the story about Hastert's long term relationship with his chief of staff, and the speculation that his wife was knowledgeable regarding and comfortable with the relationship.

If the right wing wasn't so invested in criminalizing orientation, this probably wouldn't have happened. Had Hastert been permitted to live a normal life, without any muss or fuss, he might not have sought out students while he was a teacher-coach. Too late for that, now, though. It's not the crime at this stage, it's the cover-up.
