of equally crazy extremes and the noble centrists just trying to do the right thing.

Since the Republicans wandered off into insanity, they've had to keep moving the left end of "crazy" to keep their story going. Pointing out that the Republicans are not crazy would get them labeled "partisan", the most horrible thing you could call a TV journalist.
