either on suspicion of being gay or just for the entertainment of the bullies.

One way you can be suspected of being gay is simply by not participating in gay bashing. Or by sticking up for the kid that's being picked on, or being friends with that kid. Any kind of non-conformity really.

It's a real character building experience to have to go through that. High school was the worst. I faced some of that stuff but was lucky enough to have a good group of friends who were all misfits in one way or another.
