(24,853 posts)It was without a doubt the most exciting albeit anxiety ridden job I've ever done.
Ever seen a man sucked into a jet intake? I have. I didn't know him. He went in head first and when they pulled him out of the intake all that was left was hips and legs. Flight operations came to a complete halt because he was sucked into the port intake of an A-6 that was on the catapult. 20 minutes later after the flight deck was hosed off and the plane was sent to the hangar deck because his body ruined the port engine, flight ops resumed as if nothing happened. To lose one man out of over 5,000 wasn't really that big a deal and you'd NEVER hear about it on the news.
I don't expect you to understand what it's like. Nor do I expect you to understand what it's like to work with jet engines running all around you. I certainly don't expect you to express any kind of knowledge pertinent to the fire on the Oriskany but that's ok. I forgive ignorance because the term isn't the same as stupid... Flight deck operations are like a ballet, and unless you've danced there, you have no way of knowing what they entail.
Rain? We flew. Snow? We flew. Rough seas? We flew. The flight deck of the USS America (may she rest in peace at the bottom of the ocean) was 62 feet from the water and in the North Atlantic I saw green water come over her bow because it was so rough. We flew.
Go hmm. I can excuse that because you're not stupid, you're just ignorant.
