(45,251 posts)LOL, my guess is that politicians and ad agencies commissioned a few of them, but I'm only guessing about that.
Anyway, one of them showed that the first story people learn is all that matters. A later correction or retraction does not help. To the contrary, it only makes the first impression stronger than if no correction or retraction had occurred.*
Another study shows that people believe most what reinforces their already existing beliefs. So, appealing to bigots is easy, if you are willing to stoop that low in a Presidential campaign.
And people thought Republicans revealing that Muskie's wife had once had a breakdown was low.
During a recession, notice how many times we get an unemployment report that doesn't seem so bad. However, a few days later, a corrected one is released with worse numbers. The correction never has improved numbers, though, at least not that I've ever noticed.
