He is courting them, they are courting him because they are all conservatives, strongly opposed to reproductive choice, LGBT rights and people, devoted to a traditional society-conservative. A preacher talking about the poor does not mean they are not in fact a conservative, Benedict wrote a lot about poverty and globalization as well.
