(4,657 posts).... in 1864, Grant, through his contacts at West Point, had the support of the mule lobby. The country's largest mule supplier, Your Asses R Us, ltd., gave more than $800 to Lincoln's campaign in 1859, and sought and obtained the appointment of Ima N. Worthy to Abe's cabinet as Sec. of Livestock Procurement. Worthy began pressuring Lincoln to make the change after McClellan had been quoted in the Washington Sentinel complaining about the smell of mule shit. The article was widely thought to be a hit piece by Ira "1st Way" Goldstein, managing editor of the paper.
Sherman, on the other hand, was the great grandson of Micheal "Mic" Shadey, the CEO and founder of Minuteman Musket Balls, Inc., located in Akron, OH. Lincoln and Grant appointed Sherman to lead the Armies in the West as part of a deal to reduce the amount of munitions MMB, Inc. was selling to the South by 50%.

So, obviously, Lincoln's changes of his generals had nothing to do with actually trying to win the war, but instead were merely early examples of DC politics as unusual.
