Zimmerman to the ground and Zimmerman shot Martin as he walked or ran away.

If Martin was backing up from Zimmerman (while continuing to face him), the bullet's entrance would be in the front.

As for why there are so many threads, seems to me defenders of Zimmerman are using the head wounds as a sort of latter-day stigmata, to cast Zimmerman as the righteous victim\martyr here (while ignoring the reality that Martin lies dead). As you rightly note, the head wounds are irrelevant to the question of where the shooter and victim were in relation to one another when the shooting took place.
