7. Sin is the ultimate gimmick

It taps into narcissism. People seek religion when they feel guilty. They are welcomed by people who they admire because of their wealth or whatever and those role models disclose their sins, proving themselves to be humble. They are honored to get saved and baptized and especially forgiven. Another part is rejecting their former selves. Especially when they are educated, rational, compassionate, poor (a big part of it is preaching eventual business success), etc...

Past "sin" of politicians would only matter if they were hypocrites. I bet Trumps display of "humility" will resonate with a lot of fundamentalists who admire wealth and fame. "This great man has written all of these books, made millions of dollar, and is still humble before the word of God" or something along those lines.

Kind of like how his picture with the republican judge who is brown has convinced his followers he isn't racist.
