A road rage incident over a Walmart handicap parking spot that landed a woman in the hospital could send another to prison.
Kezia Perkins, 32, and Janis Gotz, 72, were each angling for the space in front of a Greenfield Walmart back in February. Store video shows Perkins who did not have a handicap tag on her car had the first shot but couldn't turn sharply enough to make it into the space.
As Perkins backed up for a better angle, Gotz who did have a handicap tag came from the other direction and took the spot.
Perkins got out of her car and yelled at Gotz through her window, and minutes later, according to prosecutors, chest-bumped the older woman as she walked toward the store, sending her to the slushy pavement. The fall broke Gotz's left leg and hip.
After a trial in Milwaukee County Circuit Court, a jury on Friday convicted Perkins of felony aggravated battery. She faces up to three years in prison at her sentencing Nov. 9.
Earlier in the day, Perkins told the jury that she was upset that Gotz had taken her spot, after she had indicated she was trying to park there. But she said she only meant to tell Gotz she was rude when Gotz made racial comments to her and suggested she had no business parking in a handicap spot. Perkins is black; Gotz is white.
Assistant District Attorney Michael Lonski asked if Perkins didn't just make up the racial claim to gain sympathy with jurors, several of whom are African-American.
