In my opinion we should praise good positions and denounce poor ones, rather than praise or denounce personalities. I take the same view with Obama: the man has done some good things (ACA, Iran deal, repeal of DADT) and a whole host of evil shit (condoning torture, indefinite detention, executing enemies of the state without due process, terrorizing third world countries with drones, criminalizing investigative journalism, prosecuting whistle blowers, increasing our military presence in Africa by 217%, destroying Libya in defiance of law, etc.).
I will still praise the good things Obama has done, but overall he has done more ill than good. I can see others taking a similar view of Pope Francis, but he should still be praised for the things he gets right.
