In reply to the discussion: Where is Romney's Birth Certificate? [View all]aint_no_life_nowhere
(21,925 posts)I'm not aware of all the facts surrounding Romney's family nor of the specific date his father came to the U.S. Citizenship acquired by a child born abroad of U.S. parents isn't and hasn't always been automatic. The child must be born in legal wedlock as one of the requirements for automatic citizenship (that's today and I'm not sure of the law when Romney's father came, whenever that was). If Romney's father was born as a result of a polygamous marriage, he would have perhaps been considered illegitimate as polygamy was considered an immoral and deportable offense. Under the Immigration Act of 1891, the federal government acquired the right to examine the entry of aliens and exclude and deport them under several restrictions including poverty, disease, and the advocacy of polygamy. If an illegitimate child is born of a U.S. parent I believe he must verify his birth before his 18th birthday. If Romney's father was a child of a polygamous marriage, or if he practiced polygamy in Mexico, or if he advocated polygamy and lied about any of these things when he was examined by U.S. immigration, and if he didn't take the proper steps to confirm U.S. citizenship, that itself might have rendered him liable for deportation. I know that's a lot of "ifs" and speculation, but hey, I despise the fucker.
