That trailer had Lucas' flaws as a storyteller all over it: it got bogged down in the details and didn't seem to understand where the emotional hooks were. If Abrams had control it doesn't show.

I've actually been making the point that this is a 100% better reboot trailer both as marketing and as filmmaking, without even considering that Abrams is running the Star Wars reboot as well:
