In reply to the discussion: Christopher Columbus statue in Detroit takes an axe to the head on Columbus Day [View all]MADem
(135,425 posts)177. That is a rather careful and symbolic defacement.
A Detroit statue erected in 1910 to honor the Italian explorer was vandalized on Monday, a day that happens to be Columbus Day. The statue was splattered with red paint and had a hatchet taped to its forehead.
That's very polite! Wash off the paint, untape the hatchet, and the stupid statue in back in business.
That said, this thread is very interesting--a pro-Columbus spammer? Really? Tony Soprano's crew is bored, or something? Maybe they should listen to Furio:
I think at this point in time more people are becoming aware of Columbus's excesses in service of the Spanish crown. At the time he was behaving reprehensibly, the attitude that anyone who didn't have a developed society was a "savage" (and thus, without merit, on the order of animals--they also believed they didn't have feelings either) held sway. It doesn't excuse their behavior, but it explains why they would act like such blatant assholes.
