In Washington, summer was unusually hot and dry, even in the West of the state. It got so bad that our blackberry season lasted all of two days here on Vashon, before the ripe berries turned to gnarly raisins. Assuming they even ripened at all instead of being baked hard.

This is not optimal for soft-bodied insects like caterpillars. And since crickets and grasshoppers rely on temperature and humidity ot get their breeding on, it was pretty bad for them, too.
