(4,840 posts)I also think, to a certain extent, the President intentionally contributed in encouraging Trump to run when he made a fool of him at the White House correspondent's dinner. Trump's ego was severely bruised that night and he saw the position and power that enabled Pres. Obama to embarrass him so badly. Personally I think that was all it took for an egomaniac like Trump to decide he wanted that same kind of power for himself and I think that's what many democratic strategists were hoping for. Why?
Because they know Trump running and being nominated will have only two possible outcomes:
1. Trump just running and participating in the debates is severely damaging the Republican brand, whether he loses or is nominated and wins. The fact that conservatives put this egomaniac on the same stage is a huge win for democrats right there.
2. Even if Trump wins, his nomination and election will have shifted the Republican Party so far into crazy town things are bound to not go well for him and his party while he's in office.
Of course, Trump being elected looks bad if you take the short view. But I imagine democratic political strategist take the long view and see having a wreaking ball leading Republicans, who is going to antagonize all different groups is going to ultimately reap rewards for the Democratic brand.
