A firearm will, in theory, give you the chance to defend yourself. That's why most people have them.

There is also the possibility that
a. you won't ever need it
b. if you need it, it won't be at hand
c. if you try to use it, it could be taken away and used against you
d. you will shoot an innocent
e. you will shoot yourself

All of these are possible. In fact, option E is the most likely as 2/3 of firearm deaths every years are suicides.
