Last week someone posted a poll about which R candidate was the most dangerous. I picked Cruz and my reasons were nearly identical to your OP.
He's not selling a product, like Trump. He's a true believer and the craziness that comes out of his mouth is not for effect. He means it.

On Edit: I now recall the poll being about the type of conservative most dangerous. Because i used Cruz as my example, i went with Theocrats, but for the exact reasons as above and in your post.
