The last time we had a global warming scenario was during the Viking Age. While they did not have thermometers then, there is a lot of literature and geological evidence of what happened then. Some areas benefited greatly as increased agricultural production led to the rise of the Vikings. Other societies such as the American southwest were devastated by the climatic changes and were crushed by drought. The Little Ice Age which followed (and which we are just climbing out of) destroyed Viking power and had a very negative effect on all of Europe.
