Day where Palmer would be might have been the final straw in the Feds taking action. Palmer's involvement with the group might have resulted in the rapid escallation in the group's activities and resulted in even greater danger to the community.

The citizens of his county cannot rely upon Palmer to perform the job that he holds because they cannot trust him to uphold the law and the US Constitution.
