(154,021 posts)dogs are domestic animals. Parrots, never ever make that mistake. You are developing a relationship with an intelligent, but wild creature, that is far from domestic. Some cat people say that about cats, and I have never been owned by a cat, so I don't know.
Yes, dogs are intelligent, about 3 year old equivalent. and can understand something like 300 words,
With parrots, we know due to the research with Alex that they are anywhere from a 3 year old mental age, with an intelligence of a five year old, if not slightly oder. I know they understand language. And as long as you are willing to work with them and develop a relationship, you will be rewarded with a hell of an experience that is not like that of having a dog... it is very different.
I had a dog when growing up, blackie, and the relationship with these guys is very different. I quip they trained me.
So I will miss that... this is the second in the flock and no, Connie is not getting another brother or sister. I am not willing to be outlived by a parrot.
