(14,180 posts)112. Do look for grieving behavior.
Two weeks ago today, our beloved Tortie, Pepper, had to be put to sleep after throwing a clot that left her both unable to walk and in great pain. Totally unexpected, and devastating.
We have a 5-year-old Dachshund, Heidi, that is still going around the house looking for Pepper. Yesterday she was sitting under a window in the dining room, where Pepper used to perch while watching for birds. Heidi also sits at the top of the basement stairs, as if she's waiting for Pepper to come up. She sometimes whines. Pepper was here when we got Heidi, so Heidi is truly lost right now. I don't see why it would be any different for birds who were raised together.
Again, I'm so sorry. They are not "pets" -- they're members of the family.

I'm sorry Nadin. Words are so damn inadequate! I had a bird once I think of from time to time.

Very sorry to hear this. Birds are such good buddies--hurts terribly to lose them.
