instead of admitting there might be some truth

I am sorry that a pet was lost, but if something can help prevent future loss, I would sure want to know.

We lost a baby pup about 7 years ago, we were partially to blame as the tether we used was not strong enough. It was horrible and painful but we never let it happen again.
