(36,925 posts)The victim in this case was sexually assaulted. Now I'm sure there are people out there who will let you mutilate their gentiles for a cab fare, but that doesn't mean the settlement properly compensated her for her loss and suffering. For one thing, she was a highly trained medical doctor, so the systematic destruction of her career path at that point was not without personal loss, even if you completely disregard the suffering she went through in the process (which you seem to have done). For another, the settlement she was given was not just for that one incident, but rather a systematic hostile work environment she faced for many years. If you don't know the details of that, you should probably find out before commenting because Manning was part and parcel to that abuse as well. For Manning's part, he never suffered anything at the time, despite the reality that today he would likely be charged with a felony and be required to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life (and rightly so) along with the complete destruction of his football career (and rightly so). So we should be clear that true justice was never received by the victim, despite whatever payment she received from the university.
So let's say that's all there is to the story and you might want to make the case it wasn't really all that bad because you'd happily consent to Manning's junk being forced on you for less money. Despite the glaring fact that what was done was completely without consent, you still wouldn't have much of an argument, but that isn't even all there is to the story. Manning lied about the original assault. This has been proven by the very witness he cited who refused to lie for him. Manning and his father have continued to lie about his victim decades after the fact, intentionally defaming her for which she was rightly awarded a settlement.
So the bottom line is the victim in this case is still pretty damn far from receiving true justice, and there's a pretty big difference between having one's reputation besmirched through no fault of one's own and having one's reputation besmirched because it was very richly deserved.
