being interviewed were always asked by the reporter what questions should be asked. I don't think that changed until 60 minutes came along and started to "Gotcha interview" style. But everything was more civil back then. No one ever question what politicians or business leaders said. No one questioned what the defense department said about Viet Nam. That was "And that's the way it is" from Cronkite.
