(15,882 posts)FDR and the Dust Bowl. Republicans didn't run, and if they did, they risked their lives. I saw one that dared to put his sign on the side of his vehicle, which had a couple of 6 year olds standing up in the bed) peppered with shotgun pellets. Free speech wasn't really big back then either.
(It's astounding how whole states can lose their memory of how they only got through the adversity of the dust bowl and the depression because they cooperated with each other, and turn into the selfish bigots they are today.).
It was in '71 the parents, the Democrats I grew up with, showed up at our high school and incited their kids to riot, helping them beat and chase the black kids daring to be bussed by the state to "their" schools across town. They turned over a bus.
I was already on the outside of the majority back then, so I mostly just left. I dropped out of HS in '71, got a GED and went in the Navy's nuclear program. It was safer. Went back to the University later when it was a little calmer.
Mrs. Clinton said "hearts don't change, not really". She at least got that right. Our generation, the kids who were supposed to be more conscious of race and oppression, didn't turn over buses. We hurt people with law and pretended to be better. Profiting from the worst in people, she and Bill are quite happy to mine the gold he got from pandering to people's mistaken belief that black folks were the cause of our problems, should lose their relief, and sent more to prison.
Didn't do jack shit to bring white people to account for their behavior. Hillary was at least right about the heart thing. You can't expect people to surpass their training.
I have a pen which will only write "Bernie Sanders". Weirdest thing.
