(2,251 posts)Since the students that are typing their notes are capable of so many more words per minute, they are probably concentrating on getting as much typed as possible...maybe even trying to get the entire lecture (quantity over quality). I'd argue that not only are they not synthesizing the main ideas, but that they might not even be hearing them. The students that are taking notes by hand, have to be more selective in what they write down, and probably spend more time actually listening to the lecture.
Interestingly enough, I found that through my later years in school, I was actually better off by taking less notes. I'd write down things I might have to memorize (dates, quantities, etc), but other than that I was better off simply listening to the lecture, and asking questions.
