(15,255 posts)Greater than 40% I believe. In my state of New York you had to be registered in a party by October 9th in order to vote in April. Unlike us political junkies lots of people aren't tuned in to these details until much later and so a great many NYers who would have voted could not. I have a young friend in her thirties who went to vote on election day only to find that having changed her voter registration to reflect her new married name also meant that she was dropped from the Democratic rolls.
There are so many ways to suppress the vote in the US. I just find it sad. I have been a Democrat since I registered to vote at 18. I got to vote for Jimmy Carter my first time. I do feel like my party and my country are leaving me behind and it makes me very sad. I really like President Obama, I think he is a very decent man. I just would like my party and my country to push left before it is too late.
