5. At the time I was there, the ocean was still frozen solid

In several places the ice plates had cracked and heaved up revealing the amazing turquoise color of the ice itself. They can only get ships in and out of the harbor for 6 weeks out of the year and even then they have to bring in icebreakers.

Bare lumber that had been used in the 50's to hold up various utilities was unpainted still looked new because wood doesn't rot there.

It was in June and the temps were just barely getting above freezing. The sun never set or even came close to setting the entire time, so 3am was just as bright as 3pm.
