We lived in Detroit and our next door neighbor, Mr Schmidt, was a leader of a United Auto Workers "Flying Squad" which would "vote early and vote often". My father came home from work and Bob Schmidt was in his driveway washing his car. My father was a UAW member at the time (before he was promoted) and said, "Hey, Bob, aren't you supposed to be out on the road hitting voting booths?" Mr. Schmidt said, "Hell, Eisenhower's got it in the bag, no use in going out tonight."

I also remember my father's comments to me after Eisenhower and Stevenson had been nominated by their party's conventions that, "You know, 1939, I didn't have one bit of say in either one of those nominations and i have to choose between them."
