People, including pundits (who are laughable), were saying that Donald Trump would flame out.

I would not assume, with those recent CNN numbers, that Donald Trump would lose in a general-election landslide (to a Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton). What would help create that is if the Republicans, as they are doing now, put the screws to him. Thing is, that affects down-ballot races and, frankly, Old Guard types like U.S. senators John McCain (R-Arizona) and Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa)—their first elections in 1986 and 1980—want another term.

Voting habits, over the last three presidential elections—2004, 2008, and 2012—have been that states with U.S. Senate elections tend to see same-party carriage—President and U.S. Senate—at a rate of about 80 percent. In other words: 33 or 34 states may be on the schedule—and 25 to 27 end up carrying for the same party at both levels.

So, I don’t think the Republican Party are going to lie down just for satisfaction of Trump ending up losing badly.
