(6,324 posts)As a person with Native American blood it disgusts me to no end. But detaching myself I see what he is doing.
He knows her history with the claims of Cherokee ancestry and the appearance she used that to get an advantage are a weak spot for her. He knows the general public, and especially anyone who would ever vote for him, doesn't see it as an insult in the context we do.
He is trying to cut her off at the knees by using an insult that he knows will bring controversy but will at the same time draw just as much attention to her problematic history. She can't directly respond without also having to talk about that again- something that's not in her best interests.
It taps right into right wing white male hatred of affirmative action and minorities and it's a "safe" target to do it since her claims are disputed. "I wasn't making fun of a real Native American, just a faker who pretended to be one to get an unfair advantage".
And by showing he is willing to go there and make it an issue he also is throwing a preemptive attack to show Hillary or Bernie that if she gets to be a VP candidate he will use this to make them think twice.
