(6,324 posts)Yes, in the overall picture it's good for him I think. Nobody offended by it was voting for him anyway, and it attacks her credibility. He stands to lose nothing and discredit a person outspoken against him.
As for it being disputed- Google "Elizabeth Warren Cherokee" and you will read tons. One person when it first came out did an article claiming her claims to Cherokee ancestry had merit but later withdrew that when it was discovered the documents being cited as proof couldn't be produced and were never seen. She has been unable to name any ancestor that is Cherokee but claims that "family lore" is enough to back her claim up.
Except that every other white person you meet when they learn you are Native always has that "family lore" about the "Indian princess" somebody married so they have Native blood too- to the point where it's almost funny if it wasn't so sad. And here in the east almost always Cherokee.
What certain is that she isn't enrolled in any of the 3 Cherokee nations and she does not not do they have any evidence that would prove sufficient for them to allow enrollment. She cannot be legally classified as a member of any Cherokee nation and none of them have any evidence in their well documented archives of anyone in her family being Cherokee. None of that is in dispute. Ask any of the 3 Cherokee nations and they will tell you Elizabeth Warren is not, by thier standards, Cherokee.
Now, is it possible she has some Cherokee way, way back many generations? Sure. But her history is known far enough back that if she does it's such a small degree she isn't eligible for tribal membership. But that is possible for anyone if you history is unknown way far back. If you going to claim it, especially in the ways she did where she was recognized for her accomplishments as a Native American, you should be able to document it more than "'my granny told me". That would be like a white person whose DNA test showed 3% African ancestry demanding to be eligible for scholarships for African Americans- at that point your just white and need to accept your whiteness.
