Yes. For me (and perhaps for Hemingway?), John Donne said it best. I wish the beginning of the poem were not so Europe-centered or male-centered, but it always moves me anyway.
Any man's death diminishes me,
Because I am involved in mankind,
And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls;
It tolls for thee.
