The FBI did their groundwork, but biffed the follow through. They should of, could of, flagged his name/SSN/DOB in the NICS database to at least force a delay for further processing for when he bought the AR which has been reported was a week before the shooting. The CA cops did great. I was a street cop in the 80's and believe me it's very easy to buy a story sold by a calm smooth talker and let them go on their way if the computer or dispatch doesn't spit out a reason to detain them or dig further. It was a great catch that may have averted another tragedy.
